Troye Sivan ‘Something To Give Each Other’ Tour
Date: 23rd June 2024
Venue: OVO Hydro - Glasgow
From the moment Troye Sivan stepped onto the stage, his performance was a meticulously choreographed dance through a narrative of personal expression. Each movement seemed purposeful, accentuating the emotions conveyed through his lyrics. The visuals were stunning, with a mix of vibrant colours, abstract patterns, and intimate close-ups which highlighted Troye's connection with the audience. Authentic LGBTQ+ representation was also translated throughout the choreography from cheeky innuendos thrown in, to the delivery of more striking and explicit moments.
As the house lights darkened and the first notes of ‘Got Me Started’ resounded throughout the venue, it was evident that this was going to be a memorable evening. Troye's stage presence was magnetic, captivating the audience with his sweet voice and profound messages of love and self-acceptance, which hugely demonstrated the transformational power of music and the significance of embracing one's true self.
The setlist featured a fantastic mix of hits from his prior albums and newer tracks from his most recent release. Songs like “Rush”, “1999” and “My My My!” had the entire auditorium dancing, yet more introspective tracks like “could cry just thinking about you” and “Can't Go Back, Baby” created heartbreaking moments of connection between Troye and his audience.
It was the Australian artist’s connection with the audience which was the evening's main highlight. His genuine gratitude and compassion were clear as he took the time to talk directly to the crowd, sharing tales and thanking them for their support. These personal touches made the concert feel more intimate, despite the scale of the venue. The production value of the show was exceptional and the stage design was visually beautiful, with a mix of vivid colours, sophisticated light displays, and fascinating graphics that matched each song perfectly. Additionally, the choreography and backing dancers brought a dimension of excitement to the overall performance without overshadowing Troye's innate ability.
A main standout moment of the night was Troye's performance of “Still Got It”, a song which has personal significance for both him and his fans. During this performance, the audience transformed Glasgow's world-famous OVO Hydro into a shimmering sea of phone lights. This collective gesture created an emotional scene, emphasising the unbreakable bond between Troye and his fans and served as a testament to his journey from YouTuber to global pop star, where such shared experiences are captured and cherished. The tour has really demonstrated his evolution, not only as an artist, but also as a person, over the last decade of him being an online figure.
Sivan has always been an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, and this concert was a passionate celebration of his own sexuality and advocacy. His songs and theatrical persona conveyed sentiments of acceptance, love, and pride. Between songs, he addressed the crowd directly, giving personal tales about his life as a gay man and encouraging them to embrace their true selves. The inclusive spirit in the room was palpable, with people waving rainbow flags and wearing brightly coloured clothing in solidarity.
