Enter Shikari: Live at O2 Academy Birmingham

It was a rather miserable Friday night in Birmingham, on 6th December, when the O2 Academy was set ablaze with the electrifying energy of Enter Shikari. Supported by rising American alt-rock band Teenage Wrist, the atmosphere in the venue was palpable from the second the doors opened.

Teenage Wrist took to the stage first, and they held the crowd in the palm of their hands right from the start. Their sound resonated beautifully, showcasing a brilliant vocal performance from the lead singer, Marshall Gallagher, who commanded the stage with both charisma and talent. It was a pleasant surprise to discover how many in the audience were already familiar with their music, as rounds of applause grew louder between each song. The Californian band’s ability to engage and connect with the crowd left a lasting impression.

As the lights dimmed and the anticipation built, Enter Shikari erupted onto the stage, launching into a set that was as dynamic as it was diverse. The crowd were at a 10 from the off, and Shikari’s refreshing approach to mixing up their setlist kept the energy alive throughout the entire show. The inclusion of classic tracks like “Antwerpen”, alongside newer material like “Dead Wood”, created a perfect blend that catered to both longtime fans and newcomers alike. The audience were clearly here for every minute, screaming along with fervour.

Rou Reynolds, the band’s charismatic frontman, is a natural performer; his effortless stage presence brought an infectious energy that swept through the venue. Requests for crowd-surfing quickly turned into a reality, with Rou even getting in on the action himself at certain points. The reimagined version of “Sorry You’re Not a Winner”, mixed in with “The Jester”, transformed the venue into an all-out rave, with the crowd fully immersed in the euphoric atmosphere. The chaotic energy of the night was palpable, with the staff working tirelessly to keep up with the demands of this Brummie bunch.

The British alt-rock fourpiece never fail to impress; their ability to connect with fans on every level is a testament to their status as one of the most incredible live bands around. For those who know what to expect, it’s a captivating celebration of music whilst, for those experiencing it for the first time, it’s an exhilarating whirlwind that leaves you craving more.

Enter Shikari’s Birmingham performance—the penultimate night on their “Dancing on the Frontline” 2024 UK tour—was nothing short of spectacular. With a unique blend of old and new tracks, high-octane energy, and an engaging support act in Teenage Wrist, this rapturous night was an unforgettable experience that everyone should get to immerse themselves in at least once.
